Definition: Notarial Act / Notarization

A notarial act or notarization is the physical act of a notary in:

  • taking an acknowledgment;
  • administering an oath or affirmation;
  • taking a verification upon oath or affirmation;
  • witnessing or attesting a signature;
  • certifying or attesting a copy;
  • receiving a protest of a negotiable instrument;
  • certifying that an event has occurred or an act has been performed; or
  • any other act that a notary public of the State of Washington is authorized to perform.1
