A legacy is a gift of money given in a will.
It is not necessary for a will to include the formal word “legacy” to give a legacy. For example, “I give a legacy of one thousand dollars ($1,000) to my sister, Janine” will have the same legal effect as “I give one thousand dollars ($1,000) to my sister, Janine.”
